Catchin’ Cats in Virginia

By Airyn Riverstone

  1. *Species*: Virginia’s got Blue, Channel, and Flathead Cats. Blues dominate, with Flatheads in Piedmont and Channels in SW.2. *Habitat Hacks*: Cats chill in deeper holes, submerged brush, ledges, and channel edges. Look for them where the water’s stained or murky.
  2. *Seasonal Shifts*: Winter = deep slow-movin’ water, spring = shallow warm water, summer = current and holes, fall = shallow to prepare for winter.4. *Catching Kids*: Teach the kiddos about catfish – they’re a fun, tasty battle. Take ’em to a lake or river, keep it simple with worms or cut bait.
  3. *Catch & Cook*: VA cats make mighty fine eatin’. After filleting, soak in milk to remove any muddy taste. Then it’s battered and fried heaven! 🍗🤤

1. *Best Spots*: River mouths, canals, lakes with heavy vegetation or structure. Blue Catfish love current, Channels prefer warmer shallows.

2. *Best Times*: Night fishing in summer, early evening/morning other times. Full moon phases can trigger feedin’ frenzies. 🌕

3. *Bait & Tackle*: Cut bait (shad, bluegill), nightcrawlers, stink baits. Medium-heavy gear, 6-8ft rods, 20-40lb line, circle hooks size 2-5/0.

4. *Rigs*: Slip sinker rig, fish finder rig, Carolina rig. 2-4oz weights, depending on current.

5. *Techniques*: Casting out, letting it soak, lift and drop. Drag the bait along

the bottom. Fishin’ holes, breaks, drop-offs.
6. *Regs*: Check Va DWR for creel limits and size restrictions. Some waters have speical regs.
*Pro Tip*: Catfish use senses other than sight, so make your presentation stinky and slimy! 💨
